From the desk of our Library Director John……
This is the season of holiday events, wrapping, long lines at the checkout, fruitcake, stockings, dreidels, candles, memories, family, friends, food, Hallmark movies, candy canes, giving, and did I say food?
As a kid I was so excited about this time of year. I remember one Christmas morning when I thought that all I got was socks and underwear, monopoly, and a ugly sweater. It wasn’t till after dinner that I received the two gifts that I asked Santa for: a Schwinn Blue Bicycle with a horn and a book that really changed my life.
The book was the best gift from that Christmas because it was a gift that I could keep opening; an adventure that I could enjoy wherever I was at. “Bridge to Terabithia” was that book which opened up my eyes to the joy of reading. Neil Gaiman said, “Books make great gifts because they have whole words inside of them.”
One of the greatest things for me is to see when a child comes to the library and is so excited to get their first library card and checks out their first library book. Everyday we see parents reading to their children and children reading their favorite books.
This giving season, I hope to see many giving the gift of reading, so come one and all to explore everything our library has to offer. Check out a book or two and embark on an adventure through space and time. Never miss the opportunity to share the gift of inspiration with a friend.
~ John
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”
